The unity desktop will be removed first and then install gnome desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Step 1. Remove unity desktop and lightdm service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>Part 1. Remove packages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remove unity desktop and lightdm by the commands below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo apt remove unity*\nsudo apt remove lightdm\nsudo apt autoremove<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Reboot the computer and enter recovery mode again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Step 4. Install gnome desktop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>Situation 1. Install the latest stable version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Add ppa source with command below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team\/gnome3<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Then install the gnome desktop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo apt install gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h3>Situation 2. Install the latest version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-red-color\">Attention: The latest version may unstable, which has known that some bugs may happens in the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add ppa source with command below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team\/gnome3\nsudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team\/gnome3-staging<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Then install the gnome desktop(if it is the first time to install gnome desktop):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo apt install gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Upgrade the latest gnome desktop(if it is update from installed version):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo apt dist-upgrade<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2>Step 5. Repair broken packages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Press &#8220;Ctrl+D&#8221; to back to the recovery mode menu, and choose &#8220;dpkg&#8221; option:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.davcloud.top\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/recovery-dpkg-option-1024x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.davcloud.top\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/recovery-dpkg-option-1024x358.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.davcloud.top\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/recovery-dpkg-option-300x105.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.davcloud.top\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/recovery-dpkg-option-768x269.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.davcloud.top\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/recovery-dpkg-option-1536x537.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.davcloud.top\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/recovery-dpkg-option-2048x716.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Then follow the guide and repair all the packages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Step 6. Reboot and finish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reboot computer and all done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">Remind: If the computer loops in startup the GUI but cannot load the log in interface, it is usually cased by the loss of gdm and other packages.
